Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier prowled this Midwest town while filming "In The Heat Of The Night" in fall 1966. Though the whole movie was set in Mississippi, no part was filmed farther south than Tennessee and the town scenes were mostly shot in Illinois.

I work in Sparta, Illinois, where the town scenes were filmed. As I understand it, the film takes place in Mississippi, but is only "set" in Sparta MS because Sparta IL was chosen as the filming location and that way they didn't have to change some of the signs.
