Face it: The tax fairies aren't going to file your tax return for you. Here's a step-by-step guide to finding and filing those tax forms you've been avoiding. [Related content: taxes, tax preparation, tax return, IRS, Jeff Schnepper] It's time to start thinking about getting those taxes done. Maybe you're in a panic. Not to worry. Just follow Schnepper's 15 steps to getting your taxes done, and you'll be much happier. Ready? Here they are: Get serious. Unless you're focused, you're going to see that receipt six times rather than the once you need. This is all mental now. Schedule a time to get to work and commit to that time. Then . . . Smart Taxes blog: Keep up with the latest tax news and changes Get started. Remember that commitment to get to work? Keep it! This step requires action. Get your pencil and take the blank forms out of the envelope where you've been hiding them, praying that the tax fairies would make them go away. My father reminds me of the old Brooklyn proverb, "A trip of a thousand miles begins with a traffic jam." Get in that "jam," and your tax return will begin to jell. Now . . . Get organized. Something has to go on those returns. Get your W-2s together to report wages, your 1099s to report interest and dividends, your 1099Bs for reporting stock and bond sales, and your 1098s for deducting your interest and taxes. The Internal Revenue Service and your accountant both want final numbers. It makes it easier for them and less painful financially for you. Bring either one a shopping bag full of receipts and you're going to feel the pain . . . especially in your wallet. 10 tax goofs many of us keep making 5 tax myths that can cost you money 5 ways to avoid an audit Prepare for your tax preparer Don't panic if the IRS sends you a letter Get informed. Have you been following all the changes the U.S. tax code has seen in the past decade? How about the multiple new tax bills passed just last year. You can now deduct the sales tax you paid in 2009 on a new car costing as much as $49,500 and as much as $500 ($1,000 on a joint return) in real estate taxes paid on your home even if you take the standard deduction! Got a kid in college? Have you used the "tuition and fees" deduction (.pdf file) that lets you deduct as much as $4,000 in tuition and fees off your 2009 taxes? Even better, have you looked at the new American Opportunity Tax Credit, which can give you as much as $2,500 in tax savings? If not, get educated! While you're getting enlightened, don't neglect the new tax credits on energy-efficient improvements to your home. And if you're a new homebuyer (one who hasn't owned a principal residence for the last three years), you can get a refundable credit of 10% of the purchase price, up to $8,000, on a new principal residence. If you've been in your home for five of the last eight years, you can purchase a new principal residence and qualify for a 10% credit of up to $6,500. If you're "tax simple," the IRS can actually do the return for you, or you can have your return done online -- sometimes even for free. Alternatively, if you're tax-savvy, do your own return after learning the new rules. A good place to start: the IRS' absolutely free Publication 17 (.pdf file). It's hundreds of pages of everything you need to know about your 2009 tax return and your planning for 2010. If that's too much, go to a professional.

  • Google Street View Updates - Jan. 21, 2010:

Google Street View comes to Sweden and Denmark

As well as Sweden and Denmark there seems to be more Street View imagery added to countries already covered. For example in the UK it seems that many National Trust properties now have Street View. Check out Stowe House, Nymans Gardens, Glendurgan Garden, Castle Drogo and Corfe Castle.

  • Google Street View Updates - Dec. 2, 2009:

More Street View updates: See the sea, see the world

Today's update to Street View is a whale of a launch -- literally! We've added imagery gathered by our Trike for several special attractions we've partnered with in the United States, including the SeaWorld parks. Of course, that includes photos of SeaWorld's biggest star, Shamu.

Along with imagery of all three SeaWorld locations (Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio), we've also photographed Aquatica and Discovery Cove, through our partnership with SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. Another theme park addition is Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, where you can see their dozens of rides and, of course, lots of candy.

High school seniors around the country know that college application deadlines are fast approaching, so to help them narrow down their choices by getting a better feel for schools, we've worked with Boston University to add their campus to Street View

You can also browse all our new special attractions in the Street View Gallery. And if you work for a theme park, college, race track, or any fun destination that you want to be featured in Street View, be sure to visit our Street View Partner Program site to learn more.

To the north, we've expanded our coverage in Canada. Nine new cities can now be explored from the comfort (and warmth!) of your home: Victoria, Nanaimo, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Sudbury, London, Sherbrooke, and St. John's. The historic Victoria Empress hotel looks like it would make a great trip:

We're also continuing to provide imagery of entirely new countries. Today Singapore becomes the first country in Southeast Asia included in Street View. You can explore iconic locations like Orchard Road and Clarke Quay; cultural areas like Chinatown and Little India; or the heartland like Jurong and Woodlands.

In the UK, earlier this year we let users nominate locations for our Trike to photograph, just as we recently did in the US. After more than 10,000 submissions and 35,000 votes, winners are now online: Millennium Stadium, Angel of the North, Eden Project, Warwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, and Stonehenge:

  • Street View Japan and USA Update

Amongst all the excitement about the release of Street View in Canada and Prague yesterday it seems to have gone largely unnoticed that Street View has also been added to the Ryukyu Islands in Japan. Nagasaki, Sasebo, Asahikawa and Furano now also have street view cover.
In the US there has also been an update to some of the Street View imagery. Many US cities now seem to have much higher resolution Street Views than they did a couple of days ago.

  • Google Street View now Available in Canada and the Czech Republic!

Street View is now live in: Calgary, Vancouver, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Banff, Canmore and throughout the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Google Street View is also available in many cities in the Czech Republic, incluing Prague, or Praha.

  • Street View in Video...

Google has applied for a European patent that includes "full-motion video of 360 degrees images, and live feeds from video cameras to provide enhanced driving directions". This seems to suggest that Google has plans for a Street View feature that includes panoramic video.

22 More iPhone 3.0 Features You May Not Know Stay tuned for more hacks, tips, jailbreak, how to guides Subscribe to Our RSS Feed | Follow Us on Twitter iPhone Apps, iPhone Games promo codes and other products are being given away only via Twitter So you've got the new iPhone OS 3.0, and you might even be running it on your brand new iPhone 3GS. You probably think you know everything there is to know about the device and the new features the latest firmware update gave to it. You've probably even read our article "How To Use The Best 40 Features Of iPhone 3.0" and decided that with those 40 features you became a three-oh-pro. Well I beg to differ, because here's 22 more hidden iPhone 3.0 features that you might not have known about. And if you knew them all, congrats! 1. Control Scrubbing Rate Scrubbing refers to rewinding or fast forwarding through a video, song, podcast, or audiobook by scrolling the grey "position" ball left or right near the top of the screen. You may have noticed in the past that it was difficult to get to the exact spot you want to be. With iPhone 3.0, simply hold the ball, and slide your finger down. The lower you slide your finger on the screen, the slower scrub rate you will scroll with. When you scrub directly on the position bar, you go at Hi-Speed. When you scroll down some, you go at Half Speed. Some more and you get Quarter Speed, and a bit more you get Fine Scrubbing. Apple made it very easy to get to where you wanna be in a media clip. Note: This works even for videos on websites where it doesn't explicitly say what "scrub speed" you're operating at. 2. Hold "Live" Phone Number When you come accross a phone number in Safari or anywhere else that's "live", meaning highlighted blue like a URL, you can press and hold it for the following options: Call # Text message Create new contact Add to existing contact In the screenshot above I pressed and held the "1-800-MY-APPLE" number on Apple's support site. Just tapping on the number without holding it prompts the familiar "Call" option. 3. Email More Than 5 Photos At Once In our 40 tips article the "share up to 5 photos via email" tip was mentioned. Turns out (thanks to one of our commenters) there's an easy work around to the 5 photo per email limit. Simply use "Copy" instead of "Share". How it works: 1. Go to your camera roll 2. Click the arrow in the bottom left corner 3. Select as many photos as you'd like 4. Press copy 5. Open Email 6. Paste and send all the photos you want! 4. Press And Hold A Number For Other Font I'm not quite sure as to the purpose of this new feature, but it certainly is a new one. When typing, hold any of the numbers (0-9) on the keyboard and you can choose to write the number in a larger, different styled font. Notice how the alternate font is also less bold. 5. View .gif Images You can now view .gif images on your iPhone. When you receive a gif file as an attachment via email, it will be displayed in all it's semi-automated glory. However, when you try to save the image, it only saves a still shot of whatever position the image was at that moment. Even though .gif images aren't all that common these days, it's still nice to know that your iPhone can handle them. 6. LOL I'm sure you already know what I'm referring to. Apple decided to annoy the world by making the phrase "lol" always auto-correct into "LOL" on all iPhones, no matter where you're typing (SMS, Email, etc...). The problem with "LOL" is that it makes it sound like you reaaally found something funny, when in reality you just want to portray a slight smile or maybe just fill some space with a meaningless three letter acronym. Luckily, on iPhone 3.0 "lol" stays "lol". No capitals. 7. Rewind 30 Seconds When watching a video, listening to an audiobook, or tuning into a podcast on your iPhone, you can tap a button to go back exactly 30 seconds. The reason for this feature is to help you get back to where you were after zoning out. We've all zoned out while trying to listen or watch something on our iPhones, and it's a pain to get back to where you think you were. You end up going back too far, and then going too far forward. That's where easily going back 30 seconds comes into play. Note: This only works for media bought and downloaded from iTunes. 8. Text Message Box Increased In Size When writing a long text message, the text-message box used to only stretch to about 4 lines in width, causing you to have to scroll back through the message if you need to go back. The box now stretches all the way to the top, right up to the recipients name. 9. Swipe Stocks Mini-Graph You probably heard about the updated stocks application, but you might not have noticed that you can scroll through three different information panels where the mini-graph is (the bottom rectangle.) Just swipe left or right iPhone style to see top news about the company and other stock info. Also, pressing on the number to the right of the company name now includes market cap as one of the display options. 10. Contact Edit No matter how you get to the contact, you now have the "full" version of the contact available, meaning that you have full access to edit the contact's info. In the previous firmware, when accessing a contact's info from somewhere like SMS, you could only view their information, and not even all of it. This minor mistake was fixed, and it's worth remembering that you can now edit a contact no matter how you get to it. Here's a sample of accessing "Edit Contact" via "Contact Info" inside of a text message. 11. Copy A Text Message Bubble You've probably mastered copy and paste by now, but this little trick makes copying a text message even simpler. How it works: 1. Double tap a text message bubble 2. Press Copy 3. Paste! 12. 11 Maximum Pages In the previous iPhone firmware, you were only allowed 9 pages on your device. Now, probably due to Spotlight search, you can have up to 11 pages on your iPhone, which means you can have up to 180 total icons on your iPhone (including the basic ones that your iPhone came with.) 13. Promo Codes iTunes offers promo codes in various ways. You can either buy (or be gifted) an iTunes gift card, which automatically adds money to your iTunes account so you can buy whatever your heart desires. You can also get a promotional code from an iPhone app developer as a "tester". The new 3.0 firmware allows you to redeem promo codes of both types directly on your iPhone. We at iSmashPhone give away promo codes for applications on our Twitter page, so be sure to follow us there. It works on a first come first serve basis Go here to learn more about how iTunes promo codes work. To access promo codes, simply open up iTunes on your device, go to "More", and go to "Redeem". 14. Keyboard Update There are several little changes to the keyboard. While these certainly won't change your iPhone experience, it doesn't hurt to know as much as possible about this extremely expensive little rectangle. That being said, here's what's new: - Holding "." now gives you the option to type "..." - Holding the quotation mark button (") allows you to chose whether you want straight or curved quotation marks. - Holding the quotation mark also allows you to input this: ">>" or "<<" 15. Curse Words This is one of the most convenient updates in the iPhone 3.0 firmware. The iPhone no longer tries to auto-correct every single curse word you use. I've tested it out in notes, and I even got creative. The iPhone lets everything slide, auto-correct free. Just test it out on your own. 16. Tethering Hack There was an iPhone hack recently released that allows U.S. iPhone users with AT&T to start using internet tethering now, even though AT&T does not yet support it. Go here for step by step instructions. Of course, keep in mind that you are doing this at your own risk. And also be cautious because since tethering is not yet approved for the iPhone by AT&T, you may get billed extra for it. While it's unlikely, it's certainly possible. 17. iTunes U The new firmware has enabled all iPhone and iPod Touch users to access Apple's awesome iTunes U educational video collection directly from the mobile device. There are tons of recorded lectures (by the entire semester!) Be sure to check out Walter Lewin's physics lectures from MIT (they're second best only to Feynman's lectures!) To access iTunes U, open iTunes on your iPhone or iPod Touch, go to "More", and go to "iTunes U". Everything there is free, so enjoy. 18. Interruption By Phone Call When you are running an application and it gets interrupted by an incoming call, the application automatically comes back to life after the phone is hung up. This is a very convenient feature, even though it doesn't work smoothly by any means. I am almost positive that this feature is not constant, and fails for some applications. Note: The app doesn't restart from where you left off, but rather it reloads again. So if it's a game, yes, answering the call will cause you to lose progress. Here's an example of a good game of Touch Grind getting interrupted by a phone call: 19. Revert Back To App After Syncing Just like number 18, if you are running an iPhone app when you start syncing the device with iTunes, the app automatically revives once the sync is over. In the past the main home screen would just appear. Just like with phone calls, an app will automatically fire back up rather than "instantly resume" as we'd all like it to. My first impressions of the device are largely positive. Apple has once again built a product that looks good and feels great in the hand, and the familiar user interface, borrowed from the iPhone and iPod touch, is perfectly suited to the bigger screen. The iPad whizzes along, opening applications, re-sizing web pages, and zooming in and out of maps almost instantaneously. It's a great, fun gaming platform, and it's lovely to view full-size web pages while browsing the internet. Developers, no doubt, are already rubbing their hands with glee about the apps and services they could tailor specifically for this device. Related Articles Apple iPad: Tech experts' reaction Five reasons why the Apple launch matters Apple unveils 'revolutionary' iPad tablet computer First look at Apple's iPad tablet Apple iPad release: reaction The Cut podcast: 28 Jan 2010 The new touch-optimised iWork suite is beautifully realised, making it quick and easy -- and, dare I say, fun -- to piece together a spreadsheet or presentation. It also helps to elevate the iPad to more than just a plaything. As Steve Jobs said during his keynote, if you're going to create a third category of device, between the smartphone and the laptop, then it needs to be better than either for certain tasks. In many areas, this is true for the iPad -- web browsing is much better on the iPad than the iPhone, just because of the bigger screen, and physically flicking through photos, music and movies is just more enjoyable on the iPad than a laptop. But in several crucial areas, the iPad falls short of the functionality that would have made this more than just a large iPod touch. The lack of Flash support is a major issue; the iPad's big screen is designed to make the best of multimedia content and the full-screen browsing experience, but the sight of little blue squares dotted around web pages where embedded video should have been just makes you feel like you're being short-changed. The iPad's inability to multi-task could also severely hamper its appeal. It's being pitched as a portable device that you could kick back and use on the sofa at home, but you can't listen to your Spotify playlists at the same time as writing an email, or browse the web while using an instant-messaging app to chat with friends. It's one or other, just as it is on the iPhone and iPod touch, but for the extra money you're paying for the iPad, you expect something more akin to a laptop computing experience. I love Apple's new e-reader application, iBooks. The virtual bookshelf, on which your digital tomes sit, is an example of Apple design at its best; elegant, simple, well-executed. The reading experience itself was also delightful, with the pages of the virtual books having the sort of patina you would expect to find on a printed novel. Turning pages is achieved with a swiping gesture, or a single tap in the right-hand margins. But I think the backlighting of Apple's pin-sharp display is going to cause a lot of tired eyes; e-Ink is deeply unglamorous, but it does the job superbly, and I don't think serious bookworms will be swayed to chose the iPad over the Kindle or a Sony Reader. For the casual reader though, the inclusion of the iBooks app, and the iBookstore, is a boon, and likely to inspire impulse purchases of novels in much the same way as the iTunes music store on the iPhone and iPod touch is a constant temptation. Before yesterday's event, analysts were adamant that the iPad would be the saviour of newspapers and magazines, but there was little sign of that at the launch. The New York Times showed off a slick application, but it just felt like a larger-scale version of their iPhone app rather than a genuine step-change in the way printed content is delivered and consumed. I had hoped to hear more about how the iPad could be used to read magazines or shape the day's news agenda. However, it's still early days and Apple are only now able to talk more openly to prospective content partners about mutually beneficial deals. The iPad is a lovely device that gadget fans will lust after, but I'm yet to be entirely convinced that it offers enough of an advantage over my smartphone or laptop. I do think it has the potential to be a game-changing device, but it will be the second- and third-generation versions that really drive the agenda, and introduce a new and innovative way of computing. Ultimately, the iPad is a large iPod touch: a great device to draw your inspiration from, but perhaps not the seismic shift in technology that we were expecting. But watch this space... If you need to unlock your iPhone 3.0 to use it with an unsupported carrier (such as T-Mobile, the most popular non-authorized iPhone service), you'll need to follow this guide to unlocking your iPhone with ultrasn0w. Unlock is not available for iPhone 3GS at this time. ____________________________________________________________________ If you know of any other interesting iPhone 3.0 features that weren't listed here or in the previous list then please comment below! It's thanks to you readers and your comments that we can create such extensive lists :) Thanks.
